Here’s a raccoon I came up with on my free time during the Imaginism Workshop. Hope you dig it!

Segue um guaxinim que fiz no tempo livre durante o Imaginism Workshop. Espero que curtam!

Fiz este durante um “sketch-rango”, que é uma sessão de desenhos que faço com uns colegas de trabalho durante a hora do almoço. Mandei o rascunho pro Photoshop, redesenhei algumas coisas e renderizei. Os valores estão um pouco fora, mas tô pegando o jeito

Estava entediado outro dia, desesperado pra desenhar e pintar alguma coisa mas não fazia ideia do quê
Então decidi pintar um pirata bem clichê e usá-lo para estudar um pouco de valores
Depois eu faço a colorização

Apenas experimentando uma nova técnica de pintura

Here is my entry for a contest held at Blizzard to promote their upcoming game: Diablo 3. As I’m a huge fan of Blizzard’s I thought it would be nice to participate. The theme is drawing a portrait of a hero and I thought “Hmmm… there’s no better hero than the player, right?”
So here is my piece. I learned a lot from it and I was finally able to paint with colors and not just colorizing a monochromatic render, yay!

Fala, galera!

Minha participação para o concurso da Blizzard para promover o jogo Diablo 3 que está para ser lançado e, como sou um grande fã da Blizzard, achei legal participar. O tema é fazer o retrato de um herói, aí pensei “Hmmm… acho que não tem herói melhor que o próprio jogador, né?”
Então, segue o dito cujo. Aprendi bastante com essa pintura, finalmente consegui pintar diretamente com cores em vez de colorizar um render monocromático, supimpa!

I’m very excited to announce that I’ve been selected to take part in the Imaginism Workshop! Yay! I’ve always been a huge fan of Bobby Chiu, Kei Acedera and Thierry Lafontaine’s work and now I have the opportunity to learn from them in person. It will be an intense one-month course in Canada, inside Imaginism Studios.

For those who don’t know, that is the studio responsible for designing characters for Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland and Men In Black 3!

And just so this post doesn’t look like a wall of text, I’m adding a vetor version of the alien I did the other day

Fala, galera! Faz um tempinho que não posto nada. Tenho trabalhado bastante ultimamente e não tive nada de interessante para colocar aqui…até agora!

Estou muito feliz em anunciar que fui selecionado para participar do Imaginism Worshop! Aeeee! Segue um pequeno tutorial da pintura do alien do meu post anterior. Não é muito mas acho que pode ajudar quem esteja interessado em se aventurar com pintura digital.

English All right, first things first. I start by sketching the figure on a piece of paper or on Autodesk Sketchbook Pro with a Wacom tablet and after defining shape and silhouette (left) I define the lines a bit (right). I did many sketches till I got to this one. It’s important to explore and not go with the first sketch you come up with.

Eu começo rabiscando a forma do personagem num pedaço de papel ou no Autodesk Sketchbook Pro com uma mesa Wacom e, após definir a forma e silhueta (esquerda) eu defino um pouco as linhas (direita). Fiz vários rascunhos até chegar neste. É importante explorar bastante o desenho e não ir direto no primeiro rascunho.

After defining the lines even more, I go about adding some values to the drawing. I’m not focused on light and shadow yet, but on what should be of a light or dark material

Now it’s Photoshop time! Yay!
After scanning the drawing (or sending it from Sketchbook Pro to Photoshop) I do the following: I set the drawing layer (1) to multiply (2), so all the white is discarded and I can see the background. In this case I set the background color to 50% black. It’s good to not paint on a plain white background because it might be hard on the eyes. I create a hue/saturation adjustment layer (3) on top of everything (4) and add a sepia tone to the drawing by setting it to colorize (5) and changing hue and saturation (6). You might as well skip this step and paint everything in black and white, it’s just that I like painting everything in sepia

Opa! Hora do Photoshop!
Após escanear ou importar o desenho, eu faço o seguinte: Mudo o blend mode da camada do desenho (1) para Multiply (2), assim tudo o que é branco nele é descartado e consigo ver o background. Neste caso, eu faço um background com 50% preto. É bom não pintar em um background branco porque pode incomodar os olhos. Crio uma camada de ajuste (3) em cima de tudo (4) e adiciono um tom sépia ao desenho marcando a caixa colorize e brincando com hue e saturation. Pode-se pular este passo e pintar tudo em preto e branco. É que eu gosto de sépia

Time to set up the brush. For this painting I used the same brush for everything. I choose the default brush (1) and changed it’s hardness to 100%. Size doesn’t matter much right now, as I change it constantly during the painting process. I also set Opacity to 30% and Flow to 50% (2). Finally, I create a new layer on top of the drawing, but below the adjustment layer I created before (3).

Hora de ajustar o brush. Para esta pintura eu usei o mesmo brush para tudo. Escolhi o brush padrão (1) e defini sua rigidez para 100%. O tamanho não importa muito agora, pois eu mudo constantemente durante a pintura. Eu também deixo Opacity em 30% e Flow em 50% (2). Para terminar, eu crio uma camada em cima do desenho, mas abaixo do adjustment layer que criei antes (3).

On that new layer, I choose black as my color and start painting shadows. I imagine the main light source coming from the top. I vary my stroke sizes with the keyboard shortcuts: [ and ] (it’s important to use them!). If I want a more gradual change I change the opacity as well (shortcuts 1 to 0).

Naquela nova camada começo a pintar as sombras escolhendo preto como a cor do meu brush. Para isso eu imagino a principal fonte de luz vindo de cima. Vario bastante o tamanho das pinceladas com os atalhos [ e ] (muito importante!) e, se quero uma mudança mais gradual, eu altero a opacidade também (atalhos de 1 a 0)

After painting all the shadows I go for painting the pieces that are receiving light. I pick a lighter value and start painting on a new layer (left), after that I pick an even lighter value and paint it on another layer. I do all that below the adjustment layer.

At this point all those lines are starting to annoy me. So I create a new layer on top of everything (even on top of the adjustment layer), choose white as my color and start painting over those outer lines. It’s kind of fun because you feel like you’re sculpting the figure

Quando chego neste ponto, as linhas começam a me incomodar. Então eu crio uma nova camada em cima de tudo (em cima até da adjustment layer), escolho a cor branca e começo a pintar por cima das linhas externas. Esta parte é divertida porque parece que você está esculpindo o personagem

Now I go about creating more layers and painting highlights, correcting areas that should be darker and those that should be lighter and I add a secondary light source coming from the right to make the character pop up even more. I also do that because I imagine there will be a flame coming from his jetpack. This part is crucial! You have to look at the painting and ask yourself: “does it look 3D?”. If it does you go on to colorizing it, if not you have to keep adjusting and correcting it.

Agora eu crio mais camadas e pinto os brilhos, corrijo áreas que deveriam ser mais claras ou mais escuras e adiciono uma fonte de luz secundária vindo da direita para destacar ainda mais o personagem. Faço isso também por que imagino que vai ter uma chama saindo do jetpack dele. Esta parte é crucial! Você tem que se perguntar: “parece 3d?”. Se sim, podemos partir para a colorização, se não você tem que continuar ajustando e corrigindo

Now it’s time to colorize it! I have a really hard time doing this, but the result I get is somewhat acceptable
On top of the adjustment layer I add a layer with the color blend mode and start painting. It’s good to paint with varying hues. In this case I painted his pants in red and lighter areas with a more orangey tone. For the head I used the same approach, using a greenish hue to it and in lighter areas I  changed the color to a more yellowish hue

Agora é hora de colorizar! Tenho muita dificuldade com esta parte, mas o resultado até que é aceitável
Em cima da adjustment layer eu adiciono uma nova camada com blend mode definido como color e começo a pintar. É legal pintar variando os tons de cor. Neste caso eu pintei as calças dele com um tom vermelho e as partes mais claras com um tom mais alaranjado. Para a cabeça eu usei o mesmo método: um tom esverdeado para partes mais ecuras e mais amarelado para as que recebem luz.

As I finish colorizing it, I create another layer on top of everything and start picking and painting colors (to pick a color, press and hold Alt while using the brush tool). I use it to make corrections, smooth transition from one color to another and also for getting rid of inner lines (compare the image on the left to the on on the right)

Após terminar a colorização eu crio uma outra camada por cima de tudo e começo a pegar as cores e pintar (para pegar uma cor, mantenha o Alt pressionado enquando está usando a ferramenta brush). Eu uso isso para fazer correções, criar transições suaves entre as cores e pintar por cima das linhas que sobraram (compare a imagem da esquerda com a da direita)

Now I start painting the secondary light source coming from the jetpack. After that I decrease the hardness of my brush to paint the flames, add some finishing touches and that’s it

Agora eu começo a pintar a fonte de luz secundária que sai do jetpack. Em seguida eu diminuo a rigidez do meu brush e pinto a chama. Adiciono uns toque finais e está pronto
